OPTIMAL APPLICATION AND FUNCTIONS

Building of large-scale centralized or multi-level firearms identification systems based on the marks on bullets / cartridge cases:

  • Automation of record keeping of all categories of firearms subject to test firing:
    • service and civilian firearms with rifled barrels
    • combat firearms used by internal affairs agencies, internal military forces, educational institutions and research institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia
    • seized, voluntarily surrendered and found firearms, as well as:
    • any smoothbore firearm
    • non-lethal firearms
  • Automation of record keeping of objects involved in criminal cases (bullets, cartridge cases, projectiles, fragments) fired from unidentified firearms
  • Automation of ballistic trace examination:
    • identification of objects fired from the same firearm
    • solution and consolidation of  firearm-related crimes
    • determination of individual features, degree of wear and condition of the barrel by marks on the lateral surface of the bullet
    • determination of the shape, size, relative position of the mark-forming mechanisms of a firearm and peculiarities of their functioning by marks on the cartridge case.

  • Work with: bullets and cartridge cases fired from rifled firearms (including fragments of bullet jackets); bullets, cartridge cases and projectiles (pellets, grapeshots) fired from smoothbore firearms; cartridge cases fired from non-lethal firearms
    • formation of database arrays (test-fired objects and evidence objects divided by their types)
    • division of test-fired objects by types of firearm registration (combat, service firearm, etc.)
    • input of exhaustive administrative, forensic and technical information for each database object (circumstances of registration, object and firearm specifications)
    • Imaging of object surfaces with gunshot marks (input device – PAPILLON BS surface scanner):
      • 2D gray-scale image: 65,536 shades of gray, 3 µm/pixel resolution
      • 3D surface model: resolution of 10 µm/pixel on all axes
  • Automatic processing of surface images and determination of:
    • for bullets: traces of driven and driving rifling edges
    • for cartridge cases: firing pin impressions and breechface marks
  • Interactive outlining on surface images:
    • for bullets and bullet fragments: skid marks, land and groove impressions
    • for cartridge cases: 12 types of trace marks from loading, firing and ejection
    • for projectiles fired from smoothbore guns: any number of areas with significant marks and striae
  • Generation of profiles and 3D images
  • Automatic searches with creation of candidate lists
  • Comprehensive functionality for operation with databases and candidate lists, statistical analysis, report generation and information printing
  • Visual analysis and comparative examinations of 2D and 3D images of surfaces and significant areas
  • Transfer of any ABIS database images into the PAPILLON RASTR system to prepare illustrations and charts for examination reports and worksheets
  • Import/export of database objects (Papillon format) and remote access to the database via communication lines that support IP connection
  • Work with arbitrary forensic objects:
    • Surface scanning of cylindrical objects

Composition of the database object record

Each database record contains associated with the object exhaustive alphanumeric information (administrative, forensic and technical) and images with encoded areas of significance:

  • bullet: image of the side surface
  • fragmented bullet: images of surface areas containing significant striae and marks
  • cartridge case:
    • 1-9 images of the cartridge case head scanned with different types of illumination
    • image of the cartridge case side
  • smooth-bore firearm projectile: images of surface areas with gunshot marks

Minimal configuration:

Single-machine complex provides all the basic functions of ARSENAL. It can operate autonomously, or be a part of a network, or can be used as a remote station in higher-level systems.

Subject to licensing:

  • Operator workstations (the number of operators is not limited, the limit applies to the number of simultaneous sessions)
  • Matchers (limitation on the number of processor cores in use – one matcher per core)

The server that contains database is not subject to licensing. Database size has no limitations.
